Change 20–30% of the water weekly and rinse filter media in old tank water so you don't wipe out beneficial bacteria. Add live plants — even easy ones like java fern, anubias, or hornwort — because plants and algae compete for the same nutrients, and healthy plants win.

Finally, resist the urge to change five things at once. Adjust one variable, give it two weeks, and note the result. Algae is slow and so is the fix — but a balanced tank stays clear with far less scrubbing than most new keepers expect.
